Where can I find resources for learning Icelandic?

I guess the answer is related to why you want to learn Icelandic. If you plan on spending a whole heap of time in Iceland it might be nice to know at least some Icelandic. But it is a difficult language for many foreigners to learn because of complicated grammar and sounds that aren’t found in many other languages. Think of the volcano Eyjafjallajokull. Doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue. It might also be useful to know that Icelandic isn’t like Spanish, English or French where lots of people all over the world know it. Very few people outside of Iceland understand it and Iceland itself only has about 330,000 people or so. And most of them know English, Danish and possibly Norwegian. So few people speak Icelandic that some people call it our secret language. But even with all that, Icelandic is a beautiful, historic and exotic language that is well worth knowing but perhaps not all that practical. And be aware that it might be a bit more difficult than some other languages to learn and also be aware of the fact that unless you go to Iceland you might not find another person to talk to. So ultimately it is up to you whether or not Icelandic is worth the effort to learn. Not many foreigners become fluent in Icelandic so if you do learn it, you would be a member of a small group of non native people that can speak our lovely and secret language.

Learning Icelandic is also something worth doing in your spare time anyway so if it is your goal to learn Swedish (like me) or Dutch (such as myself) then feel free to take a look at how you can learn those languages as well (especially Swedish since it's more formal than the English in Iceland).
